Russian rail yard defends perimeter with IP video
A rail repair yard in Gryazi, a city in southwestern Russia near Lipetsk deployed an IP-based video surveillance system consisting of 39 cameras and AxxonSoft VMS platform to protect its perimeters. Video footage is archived on a server installed in the office building, while monitoring and management of the system is performed over the local network from remote workstations. The installations were made by local installer Vympel City.

A rail repair yard in Gryazi, a city in southwestern Russia near Lipetsk deployed an IP-based video surveillance system consisting of 39 IP cameras and AxxonSoft VMS platform to protect its perimeters. Video footage is archived on a server installed in the office building, while monitoring and management of the system is performed over the local network from remote workstations. The installations were made by local installer Vympel City.

The repair yard stores metallic spare parts inside and outside of the main building. Easy access to inventory and the lack of an outdoor surveillance system made the site a tempting theft target. Previously, only four analog cameras were installed within the workshop area, and there was a guard post for visitor inspections, leaving the perimeter practically unprotected. The yard could tighten security either by creating more guard posts, or installing a VMS to display camera feeds at existing guard posts. Since the second option was less costly, yard management decided to install a video surveillance system to cover all choke points of the establishment.

Vympel proposed to install an IP-based video surveillance system on Axxon's VMS platform. The VMS was chosen for its ONVIF support features and flexible configuration of access levels. The configurations allowed guards to watch live videos, enabled security director and yard manager to access video archives, limited workshop boss camera access to  the workshop area, while giving the system administrator unrestricted access.

Five cameras were installed in the office areas, while 29 cameras were installed for outdoor monitoring, and another five were installed in the workshop to replace old analog cameras. IP cameras were chosen for video quality and lower project costs compared to analog cameras. Part of these savings is due to the cameras simpler cabling and bandwidth requirements, such as PoE functions. Deployment of the system has protected the repair yard's perimeter, prevented inventory loss, and increased workplace productivity.
