UK data center goes IP for scalability

UK data center goes IP for scalability
UK data center Datum will be installing 200 Samsung Techwin network cameras as part of its security system. Datum opened in Jan. 2013 in the high-security QinetiQ Cody Technology Park, and currently provides 250 rack positions for data storage; when fully developed, it will offer a total of 1,000 racks for data storage and more than 0.4 hectare (40,000 square feet) of net technical space. Keysource, a specialist in the design, building, optimization and ongoing management of data centers, adopted a scalable approach to meeting Datum’s operational requirements. Bristol installer, Destination 5, installed the cameras in-line with the first development phase of the facility. The installer has completed initial installments of 63 cameras comprising of 37 network domes from Samsung’s ‘affordable’ range and 19 weatherproof network bullet cameras. These have built-in varifocal lens and IR LEDs which enable them to deliver HD images during the day and at night. In addition, seven 1.3-megapixel PTZ dome cameras have been installed. These incorporate a D/N camera and feature a 20x optical zoom lens to monitor close up detail of any activity.

Images from the cameras are transmitted over a designated security LAN to the Datum control room where they are recorded and stored for up to 90 days on one of four Samsung 16-channel NVRs. Unlike most NVRs that can only be programmed remotely, the Samsung NVRs can be locally configured and controlled with a mouse.

"The Samsung video surveillance system is at the forefront of procedures to tightly control access to sensitive areas of our facility,” commented Paul Garner, Data Center Manager of Datum.” It works alongside our access control system to ensure that we can monitor and verify, with high quality video evidence, all activity of staff and visitors.”
