Canadian convenience chain combats shrinkage on IP platform
Mac’s Convenience Stores, a chain of convenience stores in Canada with more than 850 stores nationwide since 1961, noticed an increase in shrinkage problems. Take one of its shops in British Columbia for example. It discovered more than US$1,500 worth of merchandise had been stolen in one month. To deal with the ongoing shrinkage, store owner Akram Qaryzada hired local system integrator Blanchasrd Security to design and install a surveillance system.

Mac's Convenience Stores, a chain of convenience stores in Canada with more than 850 stores nationwide since 1961, noticed an increase in shrinkage problems. Take one of its shops in British Columbia for example. It discovered more than US$1,500 worth of merchandise had been stolen in one month. To deal with the ongoing shrinkage, store owner Akram Qaryzada hired local system integrator Blanchasrd Security to design and install a surveillance system.

Blanchard selected a combination of ACTi megapixel cameras and Exacq Technologies VMS. Blanchard installed five IP cube cameras, providing a wider view of the store. Since the store aisles run diagonally, the cameras had to be positioned strategically to cover all possible angles and activities. With the VMS, the clerks on duty and the owner are able to target spots where most theft or shrinkage occurs. Additionally, the store owner could ensure staff were not at fault for any missing item.

The system provides Mac's with the opportunity to download and save video clips quickly. Qaryzada can easily provide video clips to law enforcement, in the occurrence of criminal activity at the shop. In the event of missing inventory or suspicious activity, Qaryzada can search the VMS to determine appropriate action to take. The VMS allows the operator to use the free mobile app to remotely view and search all cameras. Qaryzada can check the activity inside and around the convenience store at all times. If one of the cashiers has an issue, he or she can view the video from home via any laptop or iPhone.

The installation of VMS has proven to be highly effective in minimizing theft and eliminating customer problems in the convenience store.
