South African refinery, offices and hubs upgrade security surveillance to IP-based HD
Engen Petroleum operates the second biggest refinery in South Africa. The operation of a refinery comes with many challenges in terms of extensive regulation and strict adherence to industry standards. In light of these exacting requirements, Engen identified the need for an upgrade to their existing CCTV system at four of their national offices, as well as maintenance of the surveillance cameras at their refinery and depots.

Solution
Security technology specialist, TVMS, was awarded the CCTV maintenance contract in October 2011, outperforming several other companies in the tender process. “All of our solutions are based on the deployment of internationally respected brands and through our association with highly regarded supply chain partners,” remarks Belinda Gouws, Director of TVMS. “Our decision to use Axis as the supplier of choice hinged on their competitive pricing and wide range of quality products.”

Keeping South Africa mobile
Engen in South Africa focuses on the downstream refined petroleum products market and related businesses. The company's core functions are the refining of crude oil, the marketing of primary refined petroleum products and the provision of convenience services via an extensive retail network.

With a refining capacity of 135,000 barrels per day, the Durban-based Engen refinery supplies the bulk fuel volume requirements of the South African market, their affiliates in Lesotho, Botswana and Swaziland, and half of the needs of their Namibian operation. As a functionally complex, highly capital-intensive operation, the refinery requires extremely vigilant management. This organizational responsibility becomes significantly less challenging with the support of a comprehensive, precise surveillance system.

“Engen want to be able to accurately identify all of the people who enter their buildings. For this reason we selected the Axis network camera to cover the entrances. The camera delivers excellent HDTV image quality, providing crisp, clear video surveillance for the convenience of the on-site monitoring staff,” says Belinda Gouws. “HD cameras offer more useful images that have a higher resolution with precise detail and wider coverage.” The robustness of the Axis camera allowed for the deployment of these high-performance cameras in the fire escapes, garage areas and at several outdoor locations.

The one-channel Axis video encoder was chosen to integrate the intercom unit cameras into the IP-based video surveillance system. This allows visitors to be identified before they are granted access to Engen premises.

Monitoring that doesn't cost the earth
TVMS prides itself on its ability to offer customers a surveillance solution that not only reduces risk to their business, staff and clients but also enhances investment and maximizes profits. They have been providing holistic security solutions for the last decade to such important customers as Woolworths, Mbombela Stadium, Barloworld, Pareto, DHL, and Sandton City. This extensive experience not only guarantees the selection of the most suitable surveillance products but also ensures the functionality and flexibility of the solution.

Another Axis fixed dome that offers a discreet, affordable surveillance option without compromising on quality or reliability. Featuring multiple H.264 streams and intelligent video capabilities, the dome was chosen for indoor positioning in the Engen corridors and offices. “Ease of installation is always a factor in these larger systems,” Gouws remarks, “Axis continues to score top marks in this respect.”
