Going back to ‘school' will be more special than ever for students at UPV-EHU (Basque Country University) this year. As they return to their Gipuzkoa campus they are finding out that exciting developments have been taking place while they have been away.

An impressive brand new Central Library has been constructed and is now home to some 380,000 books and more than 130,000 magazines, and now both college and university students and faculty staff will be able to access this facility just by using their university ID card.

Called the Carlos Santa Maria Centre Library, it integrates Architecture, Law, Business, Philosophy, Education Sciences and Psychology, Teaching, Technical and Computer Science and Chemistry department libraries into one impressive, central structure. Forming part of a large campus with many detached buildings, the challenge was how to maintain the welcoming openness of the library whilst simultaneously keeping it and the university grounds secure.

The technological advantages offered by the new SALTO Systems access management system, with its wire-free SALTO data-on-card technology, enables the university to do this, joining a network of UPV-EHU buildings equipped with SALTO access technology, by integrating with selected electronic locks on doors across many different faculties and existing buildings on campus.

A key concern of the university was the ability to integrate SALTO on-line and off-line access points on the same facility, which would help to significantly reduce investment costs and make it easier to manage doors and users. The system was able to do this, giving greater value to both student and staff cards. This means they can use their access control cards for ID, debit/credit, meal plan, library, entrance to their accommodation and more.

Over 100 SALTO Locks, Panic Bar solutions, SALTO Glass Door locks and escutcheons have been installed, protecting a range of university assets including computer labs, IT rooms and the staff locker room. A complete audit trail is available on each door, providing a record of everyone who entered and when if required.
