A new physical security solution for California State University Channel Islands was built by using Augusta Systems middleware platform. Augusta reseller NIC partners served as the systems integrator for the custom, campus-wide deployment.

Leveraging the university's existing IP infrastructure, the solution provides an approach to physical security via the convergence of different security systems. Specifically, access control breaches at university facilities are capable of triggering video surveillance and instant notification of security personnel through IP phones, web browsers, mobile devices or other custom methods.

“We're beginning to realize an important vision for the university by integrating physical security onto the IP network,” said Michael Berman, Chief Information Officer for California State University Channel Islands. “This improves our ability to keep our students, faculty and staff safe and secure while enhancing our ability to manage incidents.”

While the Channel Islands campus has safety records, the university has struggled with the disparity of systems, often outdated for safety and security. Since the systems all utilized proprietary infrastructure, adding security devices meant moving further away from technology convergence.

“Our goal as the systems integrator was to overcome this infrastructure challenge,” said Adam Petrovsky, Regional Sales Manager, NIC Partners. “Augusta Systems middleware platform was the ideal tool for this work. It enabled painless data integration and sophisticated policy management.”

For the deployment, Augusta Systems solution provided a platform for integration and normalization of data, events and control functions from these different systems as well as enabling event or policy-based processing of data and events. Among the other, new systems utilized for the solution were Cisco Systems access control and video surveillance solutions and unified communications systems.
