India's Western state of Gujarat and Eastern state of Andhra Pradesh are witnessing an increase in demand for seaport security solutions, according to Aditya Morampudi, President of Morcorp Solutions.

Morampudi, whose company was part of security installations in Vizag seaport in India, was speaking to a&s International on his experience in providing security solutions to seaports.

“In India, the growth sectors are mostly concentrating in Gujarat on the West Coast and Andhra Pradesh on the East Coast,” said Morampudi. “There has been lot of projects coming up and also the captive seaports concept for the Ultra Mega Power Projects that are coming up for the Electricity hungry regions.”

Elaborating on the common requirements for security installations in seaports, he said that the selection of right equipment is extremely critical. Given the tough conditions that the equipment would be exposed to, the norm is ruggedized industrial products.

“The major challenges are mostly to do with the environmental (for obvious reasons, seaports are located in saline weather) /dust (because of the dry bulk cargo operations) and other criteria such as the kind of cargos being handles in the port/terminal,” he said.

“Networking is one important part of the challenges which will determine the success of the project, even if we go with the best of the systems and not able to plan a good evacuation of data back to the central locations, it's simply a non performing installation.”

Given the complexity of constant moving of cargo storage areas, rail, vehicle, bulk movers, and the time constraints, issues like a cable's being unearthed, a cargo vehicle snapping a over ground cable, or natural events like cyclones/typhoons or lightning are extremely significant.

Morampudi added that his company is currently deploying security systems at Hindustan Shipyard in India, which is also a defense establishment, making the project unique in terms of data security and fool-proof backups of all systems in order to keep the vigil 110 percent at all times.
