At a recent meeting of association of Indian school authorities the idea of using surveillance cameras to keep an eye over students during exams was endorsed by the members, according to a report from the Indian newspaper, Times of India.
Several schools in the country are already using video surveillance but this is only for safety.
Support for deploying the surveillance cameras for exam-hall monitoring increased after a state in western India used a similar system and recorded an increased number of malpractice cases for the year.
Such an increased use of video surveillance technology by educational institutions is in line with the country's security industry's expectations. In a recent interview with a&s, Jignesh Shah, MD of Mumbai-based systems integrator Dots Info Systems said that schools and colleges are a sector they might extend their business to, in the near future.
Meanwhile some schools believe that installing video cameras alone is not sufficient and have opted to outsource security surveillance. According to reports, a Bangalore-based school recently struck a deal with the Zicom Electronic Security Systems who provide security as a service (SaaS). The company installs, maintains and replaces security equipment and monitors footage 24/7 at their command center for a monthly fee.
