Surveillance technologies can help public transportation operators detect threats early and respond to incidents in the quickest way possible, said Jianjun Pei, Director of Traffic Solutions at Hikvision.
One of the technologies he mentioned was VCA or video content analysis, which is increasingly found in edge devices nowadays, such as surveillance cameras. “According to the relevant perimeter algorithm, the VCA technology automatically detects the line crossing or intrusion target, and simultaneously the system generates alarm signals for security guards to take necessary action before anything bad happens,” Pei said. “Users can define an area or define a crossing line, and when any object enters or comes across, the alarm will be triggered.”
Face detection is another feature that empowers modern VCA. “After the event happens, this technology helps to compare the intruder's face with all the human faces captured at key entrances and exits and stored at the data center. This way, authorities can immediately locate the suspect,” he stated.
Another advanced technology is the surveillance camera, which can offer as much as 6-megapixel videos, giving crystal clear images that can help identify people more effectively.
“Four to six cameras will be enough for buses,” he said. “The ideal positions are the bus front door and back door, and front- and back-end of the bus carriage. Panoramic camera could be a good solution, since it also covers the surveillance blind spots that are often ignored by fixed dome cameras.”
