Tourism is a huge revenue generator for Southeast Asia. As such, making sure that hotel patrons are kept safe is a huge priority for hoteliers, especially with the increased number of violent incidents at hotels. As such, according to Nafis Jasmani, Business Development Manager for South Asia Pacific at Axis Communications, “Generally we see more hotels pumping a great amount of money in enhancing their present security system towards a more integrated system between surveillance and access controls. New hotel developments or currently being developed ones are revisiting their security design to include new technologies and higher safety measures.”

In terms of what hotels are looking for, Jasmani pointed to a high adoption of network video for its high quality images and intelligent video functionality. Additionally, the use of wide dynamic range (WDR) is something else hotels can benefit from. “Generally hotels often have large entrances requiring cameras with good depth of field in order to achieve sharp images regardless of their distance from the camera. Sometimes such entrances have glass doors that can create reflections or cause difficult backlighting,” which WDR can combat.

In addition, integration of systems can provide hoteliers with a more powerful tool. “A good surveillance solution places a powerful tool for hotel owners, and Axis' mission is based not only on outstanding video surveillance cameras, but on integrating them into a smart system needed by the hotel management,” said Jasmani. Such systems could have a deterring effect on crime, he added. “But the strength of that deterrence is ultimately based on the hotel's system's ability to actually detect what's going on.”
