Bosch introduces integration partner program

Bosch introduces integration partner program

Editor / Provider: Bosch Security Systems | Updated: 5/17/2013 | Article type: Security 50

With the presentation of its Integration Partner Program (IPP) at the security trade fair, Bosch Security Systems moves to a whole new level in terms of providing interoperable solutions that fit any application's specific needs. The web-based platform assists customers in effortlessly identifying compatible video surveillance hardware or software solutions that will seamlessly interoperate with the existing Bosch installation. Furthermore, the program helps developers and other experts to design compatible solutions by ease of use integration tools and samples. All third party solutions already listed in the portal have successfully undergone stringent quality checks by Bosch.

The need for compatible partner products and systems
“The security market has become extremely diverse and complex, especially since the switch to IP solutions,” says David Lenot, Business Development Manager EMEA at Bosch Security Systems. “Different applications can have very heterogeneous surveillance requirements and customers are increasingly asking for unique solutions. In addition to this, comprehensive systems also have to be expandable at any point in time, which is why their composition needs to be a flexible one. With the help of IPP, owners can at once identify compatible partner products and systems that are a perfect match for installed Bosch equipment while adding unlimited features and services.”

Easy access to technical resources
IPP benefits partners and customers alike by providing just the right information in one place. It gives all development partners wishing to build integration tools, samples and solutions transparent and easy access to relevant resources, from documents to training. The program provides assistance across the portfolio, covering all features for integration purposes.

Customers can use the web-based “Solution Advisor” search engine to scan through existing applications, geographies or specific features to identify the right solution for the respective system. IPP helps multiply the solutions and guides the client to the matching result. Users can combine products from Bosch with leading video management devices from Genetec, Milestone, Nice and many other companies. Similarly, data storage solutions are available from a range of providers, such as NetApp, EMC and Iomega. Intergrativity is simplified by application and task-related code samples, as well as preconfigured integration packages. Additionally, the program provides a variety of technical support contacts for members and premium partners to optimize combining Bosch features or products with third-party devices and vice versa.

Beneficial partnerships for future development
Allowing a simple integration of third-party solutions has always been part of Bosch's principles. Solutions by the company are designed to be integration friendly. For example, all IP cameras and encoders run one firmware. Partners therefore can support dozens of products at the same time. With IPP, the company continues to open up its business and presents its video products in the most transparent way possible. “It is essential that innovative and technically competent suppliers of development services and series products are involved early and systematically in devising new solutions,” says Rudolf Spielberger, Head of IPP at Bosch Security Systems. In line with this philosophy, Bosch Security Systems, together with Axis Communications and Sony, also founded the international product standard ONVIF in 2008. The aim of ONVIF is to enable the integration of network video devices from different manufacturers. “IPP is thus a continuation of this way of thinking into the second decade of the 21st century.”

In addition, the micro 2000 IP cameras and FLEXIDOME micro 2000 IP cameras are ONVIF conformant and compatible with software and storage solutions of third-party integrators. This is supported by the Integration Partner Program, which gives partners immediate access to online tools for easy integration of management and recording software, video analytics, monitor wall systems and cloud monitoring.

Laying the foundation for the future

Laying the foundation for the future

Editor / Provider: Hayden Hsu, asmag.com | Updated: 5/9/2013 | Article type: Security 50

For Bosch Security Systems, China is growing quickly to become its largest single-country market. Investments are heavy — the market is a region all on its own, on par with the Americas, EMEA and APAC; the CEO visits every quarter; and the local R&D and highly automated production facilities in Zhuhai are the group's largest prized possession. Yunping Fu, the new VP of Sales for the region, shares with asmag how he plans to take the organization to the next level, through deeper verticalization and localization.

To Fu, security is an intriguingly complex business. It is still undergoing a relatively slow transition to a better IT/IP-enabled world; the product life/selling cycle is longer; and there are a lot more players with widely different calibers and less consolidation. Nevertheless, his priorities are clear: to continue to drive double-digit growth, to be even more customer-focused across the entire organization, and to lay an even more solid foundation for a sustainable future.

Continued Growth
Fu's strategy is twofold: deeper verticalization and client relations. Take the transportation vertical for example; Bosch China will zoom in on airport projects (both new and retrofit). With the manufacturing vertical, a lot of investments are going into the tobacco industry. “It is this kind of laser focus that will carry us through the next few years.” The same can be applied to client relations; go-to-market tactics will be adjusted so that every customer can be served by the “right” partner more efficiently.

**Don't forget to check out video interviews!**

Customer Focus
This regional business unit is constantly growing and recruiting talent. To serve existing and potential clients even better, all the personnel in R&D, sales, marketing and technical support will be retrained to “walk in others' shoes” so that the added value that Bosch brings can be felt more clearly. “We will also partner with and cultivate more Tier-2 VARs to be even closer to our end users.”

Solid Foundation
The ultimate goal is to ensure sustainable profitability for the Bosch organization and its partners and clients. All the verticalization and localization efforts are meant for a greater solution fit, and Bosch's continued focus on optimizing customer experience and maximizing their business benefits will be the distinguishing feature that carries the company to the next phase of progress and prosperity.

Affordable and easy, the way to go

Affordable and easy, the way to go

Editor / Provider: Hayden Hsu, asmag.com | Updated: 5/7/2013 | Article type: Hot Topics

Walk around any security show in the world today — brand new, innovative products can be scarce to find. Due to mediocre global economic recovery and longer life/selling cycles, solution developers have earmarked more resources for sales and marketing promotions of existing offerings, as well as fine-tuning and repurposing/verticalizing them. Making products cheaper and easier to deploy, in a disruptive innovation manner, has become the No. 1 priority for many (especially the big guys).

It should not be a surprise that traditional security gold mines (higher-end projects in the government and MNC verticals) are as competitive as they can get and are not as lucrative these days. Manufacturers and solution developers, big and small alike, have scrambled to develop new markets, both vertically and geographically. One thing that mid- to low-end vertical segments and emerging economies have in common is the need for price- and user-friendliness.

On the affordability front, industry heavyweights, such as Axis Communications, Bosch Security Systems, Honeywell Security, Milestone Systems, Tyco Security Products and many more, have not shied away from promoting the “Lite version” or “Home edition” of their respective offerings in trade publications, at trade shows or on their own dedicated websites. Take Secutech International 2013 for example. Cost-effective solutions from Tier-2 or Chinese vendors attracted an unusually high amount of foot traffic and eyeballs; many even ran out of their demo samples at the end of Day 2. If one were to use a pharmaceutical analogy, now would be the heyday of generic drugs.

On the simplicity and usability front, those that still do not offer vertical solutions or plug-and-play models are most likely seen as outliers. More hardware devices are packing more heat, or processing power, and can multitask and yield better results, at a lower total cost. Similarly, more management software providers, such as Genetec and Nice Systems, are offering cloud-based or easier-to-deploy models that take the headaches out of struggling integrators or users.

So, the message to take home is disruptive innovation — a term used in business and technology literature to describe innovations that improve a product or service in ways that the market does not expect, typically first by designing for a different set of consumers in the new market and later by lowering prices in the existing market.

Grow with Security 50 in Asia

Editor / Provider: Hayden Hsu, asmag.com | Updated: 5/7/2013 | Article type: Security 50

More than half of the a&s Security 50 were present at Secutech International in Taipei this year, through on-site exhibits/booths and event presentations. As Asia's premier original manufacturers' show for global solution seekers, Secutech gave the supercharged representatives an opportunity to share with the asmag and a&s team the top 50's growth strategy and focus for the year. Asia's fast rise, vertical/geography-appropriate offerings and localization efforts were among some of the recurring themes.

For all the Security 50, the Asian region passed 2012 with flying colors and double-digit growth, and most stressed the continued, heightened focus on the region, with more investments in securing or recruiting appropriate partners, product developments and personnel. Take Bosch Security Systems for example. China is now an independent region with a new, locally brewed VP reporting directly to the German headquarters. The local R&D center also has sufficient ammunitions and local talent to develop what is truly needed and used in China and Southeast Asia.

Other parts of the region — such as Mongolia and all the way to Australia and New Zealand — are also brimming with opportunities, from high-end government and MNC projects to lower-end verticals like hospitality, residential, SMBs, education, health care and more. The 50 are all busy "attacking" weight-appropriate markets and partners with the "right" tailored and cost-effective solutions. As the region is not known for clear channel structure, more are engaging in road shows and events to reach out to installers and end users directly.

It is a fun time for security professionals to be in Asia. Stay tuned to this channel for more exclusive interviews and video contents on developments in the region!

Bosch adds new functions to dome series

Bosch adds new functions to dome series

Editor / Provider: Bosch Security Systems | Updated: 5/2/2013 | Article type: Security 50

With the development of its next generation of megapixel cameras, DINION starlight HD 720p and FLEXIDOME starlight HD 720p RD, Bosch Security Systems introduces products specifically designed for high performance in extreme low-light conditions. They represent a breakthrough in light sensitivity in cameras; showing color images where others can show only monochrome, and transmitting monochrome video when others show no image at all.

With their high sensitivity in both color (0.017 lux) and monochrome (0.0057 lux) modes, the HD cameras work with minimal ambient light, delivering clear images in a multitude of applications, even where poor lighting is the principle challenge. The 60 frames per second rate also helps capture fast-moving objects in traffic, gaming and other applications.

To overcome challenging lighting conditions, Content-Based Imaging Technology (CBIT) uses Bosch's intelligent video analysis to enhance image quality. CBIT automatically detects important objects—such as faces, people and vehicles—and dynamically re-tunes the imaging settings to ensure the most useful, highly-detailed video of objects of interest are captured. In addition, intelligent auto exposure improves the contrast of important objects in the scene in both bright and dark areas.

Intelligent dynamic noise reduction actively analyzes the contents of a scene to reduce bandwidth and storage requirements. As a result, the 720p starlight cameras require up to 30 percent less bandwidth than other 720p and SD cameras, while still retaining a high image quality and smooth motion. Compression parameters for up to eight user-definable regions can also be set. This allows uninteresting regions to be highly compressed, while tuning important areas for the best image quality—allowing customers to allocate bandwidth to important parts of the scene.

The cameras have a very intuitive user interface that allows fast and easy configuration. Automatic lens wizards make it simple for an installer to accurately zoom and focus the cameras for both day and night operation, and the automatic varifocal feature means that the zoom can be changed without opening the camera.

Bringing Security 50 to life

Bringing Security 50 to life

Editor / Provider: Hayden Hsu, asmag.com | Updated: 4/30/2013 | Article type: Security 50

Held from April 24 to 26 at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center in Taiwan, Secutech International concluded with a resounding success, garnering more than 25,000 visitors and buyers from all corners of the world; one of Secutech's highlights was the Security 50 press conference, bringing the security world's top performers (by product sales revenue) to real life. Four representatives from Bosch Security Systems, Flir Systems, Milestone Systems and Verint Systems were very generous in sharing their respective company's latest developments in product innovations, partner recruitment/training and growth strategies. The event, along with a Q&A session, attracted more than 30 industry media professionals from across the world.

Organized by Messe Frankfurt New Era Business Media (formerly known as the A&S Group), Secutech is an annual international trade show for the electronic security, information security, and fire and safety industries. “Secutech is an ideal platform to highlight the Security 50,” said Parson Lee, MD and a&s Publisher. “Many will be interested to know who the top players and growers are, and I believe they can learn a lot from the elite companies in the rankings.”

a&s started the original Security 50 ranking in 2003, two years after 9/11, when security was booming as a business and a fairly high number of new players popped up all over the map by the day. Solution providers, distributors, resellers, integrators and government/MNC end users worldwide were in dire need to keep tabs on who was who. As the industry and market shift from analog and wired to digital/IP and wireless, more new names have surfaced to address new niche market needs, in terms of location, vertical and technology. One annual ranking, based on pure product sales revenues, is no longer enough for us to reflect emerging trends, prospects and best practices in real time. That is why asmag is introducing the all new asmag Rankings microsite and mobile app. asmag and a&s teams are going to great lengths in collecting, processing and presenting the latest news/financial updates, product releases and feature stories, from the security world's movers and shakers: by sales revenue (Security 50), innovation and growth performance (Fast & Furious), Asian prowess (Asia 50) and popular vote/feedback (Customer Satisfaction 50).

At this year's Secutech, 25 companies listed on the 2012 Security 50 ranking were present at the show ground, showcasing their latest solution offerings with special “50” signage. In addition to the four panelists mentioned earlier, other exhibitors included Arecont Vision, Assa Abloy, Axis Communications, C-Pro Electronics, Dahua Technology, Dali Technology, Dynacolor, EverFocus Electronics, Flir Systems, Hdpro, Hi Sharp, Hikvision Digital Technology, Honeywell Security, Infinova, Itx Security, Mobotix, Optex, Tamron, Tkh Group, VIVOTEK, Win4net and Yoko Technology.

More than 2,000 downloads/shares took place at the Security 50 Gallery on-site, where a few from the 2012 ranking, along with asmag staffers, were invited to demonstrate their latest and interact with visitors. A frequent compliment on the Security 50/asmag Rankings app was how practical it is for those who are always traveling or rushing between sites to stay connected to the industry's largest in real time.

Innovation in video surveillance and security

Innovation in video surveillance and security

Editor / Provider: Submitted by Memoori Business Intelligence | Updated: 4/26/2013 | Article type: Hot Topics

Memoori Business Intelligence recently interviewed Lars Thinggaard, CEO of Milestone, about innovation in video surveillance and the future of the security industry.

1.     Where will the major innovations in Video Surveillance come from in the next 5 years?

In the next five years, some of the major innovations will come in the way surveillance video is used by companies to optimize their business.

When you look at what is happening in our industry from a higher level, you see that it has evolved through three phases. Today, we are entering the third, or video enabling phase and this is where some of the most interesting innovations will occur. As the adoption of cloud technology and MVaaS increases in security solutions, the trend of video being used to enable business applications will accelerate.

Looking at the three phases, phase one was about video technology, the convergence of IP and analog to make innovation possible. Phase two followed with video integration. This phase was about making the solutions easy to use and more intelligent with things video analytics. The Milestone open platform is a major driver for this phase because it makes it possible to use surveillance video together with other security systems (access control, analytics, perimeter devices).

Phase three is where we will really see innovations blossom, we call this phase “video enabling.” Here, we will see surveillance video used to give better customer service and improve business processes in many industry sectors. This phase will change the way the world thinks about using surveillance video.

For example, the use of our video technology at Western Kentucky University. Their IT department services every department throughout the huge campus from their police to traffic managers to athletics and dormitory management. Most recently they installed Milestone at their medical college for training young doctors in difficult techniques. St Andrews Medical School is using our video in a similar fashion, as well. Laboratories use it to track progress in research, as well. The options are endless.

2.     How does Milestone intend to innovate the market in 2013?

We have created a separate business unit, Incubation & Ventures that operates in parallel with our day to day business to drive innovation. This team is focused on creating new game changing products and bringing them to market.

Milestone entry-level VMS is our first product from this new business unit. The product is an embedded VMS platform for large hardware companies. It was hot news at ISC West and we have more than 50 companies interested in the platform including, Samsung, Bosch, Sony, Panasonic, Asustek, Arecont and more.

You will also see innovation through our ecosystem which is a force multiplier because we share our partners' technical and market research. In the ecosystem, innovation takes place as a collaborative effort between our own engineering team and our technical partners. Today, we have over 200 software engineers developing solutions with Milestone open platform technology in addition to our own team. We simply have more engineers developing with Milestone technology and this drives innovation faster.

CoastalWatch is a great example. In California, San Diego County has a never-ending task to replenish eroded sand banks on its beautiful beaches. The potential financial impact on southern California's surfing industry is a big concern. The Surfrider Foundation San Diego Chapter partnered with CoastalWatch to install digital cameras networked with Milestone corporate version VMS. The solution is integrated with their own special water measurement analytics to monitor wave heights, breaks and sand lines. They use the video to monitor these levels on the beaches and give the county an early warning when a problem is developing. They are tracking the processes over 3 years for important research input and future coastline planning.

3.     Is the security industries' resistance to change creating opportunities for startup businesses?

Let me explain how we see this. At Milestone we see the security industry as focused on reliability rather than resisting change.

New innovations have to prove themselves first, and show that they work reliably. When you're dealing with evidence, it is just not acceptable to find out that the video you need is not there, or unclear. You might call this resistance, but it's a fact of our industry.

In terms of opportunities for startups, the Milestone ecosystem is creating many new openings. Today, we have over 6,800 partners globally that are using our open platform technology as the foundation for new product and solution ideas. The open platform gives them the freedom to select the best technology and integrate this into efficient, interoperable solutions. All backed by a global leader in the VMS industry. For many startup businesses, Milestone's ecosystem provides a “credibility token” that they use to create their own opportunities and grow their business.

4. In our research we are seeing a shift in security services; moving from just a cost centre for businesses to actually driving operational savings and delivering real ROI. How will this impact on the industry and how far can this trend go?

We agree. As I described earlier we see the industry evolving through three distinct phases: video technology, video integration and the next phase, video enabling.

Today, we are at the start of the enabling phase. You see access control, ALPR and, analytics, mobile technology , laser, RFID, and many other types of technology all working together seamlessly through the Milestone open platform. Manufacturers and end-users have engaged with the open platform and are realizing the benefits. They are beginning to ask what else we can use video for, and how this might help optimize our businesses. This phase is really about the realization of Milestone's vision, driving the convergence of video surveillance and IP based business systems.

The open platform is the enabler for many of these changes. The effect has been to redefine the industry's expectations of how we use surveillance video. The enabling phase is the proof-point. We are seeing customers look beyond using surveillance video for security and protecting assets and seeing how it can help them to optimize their operations.

For example, one of our customers, a hardware distributor, has integrated their bill of lading with video surveillance cameras. This integration enables easy documentation of what items went into the box at the distributors packing line from start to finish. If customers occasionally claim that items are missing, the distributor has video documentation that everything on the bill of lading / order was packed and shipped. This saves a lot of time and backfilling of mistaken claims.

Ultimately, I think the best way to understand this is to let our customers speak for us. Just take a look at the hundreds of customer stories on our website. They are innovators, too, finding new ways to use Milestone video to improve all kinds of processes, whether they are in retail, banking, production, transportation, healthcare, education or other sectors.

4.     As a platform for sensing and analyzing data, the video camera has enormous potential. How will it fit into the ‘internet of things'?

What I think we are seeing here is that the video camera itself is becoming a DVR. It will have, or in some cases already has, analytics capabilities and recording on the edge capabilities. As the price of RAM cards decrease over time, the camera will take on many more functions.

This is where Milestone entry-level VMS as an embedded VMS platform comes into play, and this is where you will see the overarching Milestone vision becoming even stronger. As cameras get more and more powerful, they will accelerate the convergence between the edge components and IP based business systems.

Again, I think the best way to understand this is to look at an example. Douglas Village is a high-end shopping mall in Ireland. They are embracing video enabling as a way to differentiate their business.

Originally, they bought their Milestone system to replace an older analog CCTV system. The justification at the time was security for their customers and protecting assets. However, as they grew to understand the opportunities of the open platform, they began to integrate their other systems. Access control, intruder alarms and even the intercom system. To help them optimize their business they went on to integrate a people counting system based on technology from our other ecosystem partners. In their words, “it's amazing how we keep finding new ways to use the Milestone system.”

One advanced way is how they use surveillance video to enhance their customer service. They have several very loyal disabled customers. When one of these customers drives into the parking garage, the surveillance camera recognizes their license plate and sends an alert to the control room. They then have one of their staff drive a mobility chair out to the customer and meet at their car. I think this really shows what the enabling phase is about.
